More and more businesses are opting to take on apprentices because it’s a great way of fostering the talent from within. Their relevance to business in today’s economic climate is becoming more evident, as Diane Robinson, business development manager at Southport College explains.
“They are now more relevant to today’s business needs and cover the majority of job roles. There are 200 different apprenticeship programmes available in 80 different sectors and around 240,000 apprentices in England.”
According to the MSC (Management Standards Centre) the 008/2009 academic year saw a 36% increase in apprenticeships.
A recent CMI (Chartered Management Institute) revealed many of the key benefits of a management apprenticeship. 69% of respondents felt that management apprenticeships were an effective way of developing management and leadership skills. The event is designed to aid and inform entrepreneurs of all ages towards building up and sustaining a successful enterprise. In these tough economic times, many workers who have left their jobs due to redundancy are employing their existing skills and contacts and turning to enterprise. Likewise, school leavers, many without university places, are also being thrust into the workforce and many have new and exciting ideas for business.
“…..as firms put graduate schemes on hold and implement hiring freezes, perhaps it’s time we revised our perceptions of a generation that’s beginning to show the kind of savvy entrepreneurial instincts that could deliver the kick-start the UK economy so badly needs. From selling rugby socks online and home-made jewellery to friends to opening their own hairdressing salons, young people are trying all sorts of things to generate money – and some of their ideas are turning into successful businesses”

Whichever way you look at it, the internet is a part of our daily lives. It seems that nearly everyone uses a computer these days, whether it’s nestled neatly in the palm of your hand while you ride a train or if you’re sat facing one at work. Being connected has allowed us to be more efficient and even the most obscure of needs or wants can be accessed by the touch of a button. Just the other week I heard that Leeds University medical students were to be given iPhones so they could receive e text books and lecture material.

It is with this in mind that we should consider E-Learning in the wider scope of the workforce. E-learning is a fast growing and progressively popular method of staff training. Many of us are used to social media and can find an appreciation in interacting with new forms of media. To be able to learn on the job without a staff member having to leave their seat, doing it in their time….when they choose to, can really provide some great benefits.

Knowledge-Web fully understands the current importance of cost effective and efficient techniques of staff training. Given the current climate, more and more companies are turning to E-Learning as a way of modernising and strengthening their workforce. Knowledge-Web offers an assortment of ILM (Institute of Leadership & Management) courses where learners can achieve internationally recognised qualifications.

There are numerous reasons to undertake a qualification through Knowledge-Web.
• Train at your own pace at home or in he workplace
• Flexible to suit your needs
• Reduction in travel costs
• Development of computer and internet skills
• Key areas of self knowledge and self confidence can be improved and users can take responsibility for their learning.
• Beneficial to both the employer and employee

Knowledge-Web has the expertise in place to provide quality programmes for management, personal development and leadership. Through one of the specially designed courses Knowledge-Web can bring individuals and companies alike to the forefront of modern techniques of staff training and business development

On 24th May 2010, the government announced a £200 million reduction in the ‘Train to Gain’ programme as part of the planned cuts in expenditure for the 2010/2011 financial year. Under the spending review announced on 20th October, Chancellor George Osborne plans to invest £250 million into apprenticeships ‘signalling the largest ever investment in apprenticeships” by a UK government. The aim is to recruit up to 75,000 new apprentices by 2014.

But with Government funded programmes like ‘Train to Gain’ now being axed, it may seem that there is little choice for adults who want to gain the upper hand whilst they are working. However, there is a choice and it’s called ‘Knowledge-Web’. Knowledge-Web has access to funding for anyone aged between 16-65 who wants to improve their skills and chances of career progression. Knowledge-Web is the ideal way of effectively training up staff whilst reducing training costs.

In view of the government spending cuts, top business leaders pledged their support towards apprenticeships in an open letter to the financial times. The letter, co-written by top ranking businessmen like David Frost, Director General of the British Chamber of Commerce stated;

“Business is a competitive environment. Rarely does the entire business community come together passionately over one specific topic…..with 200 types of apprenticeship available at three different levels, they are an excellent way to help staff progress while building their essential skills. And government contributes towards the training costs.”

Apprenticeships can be a real bonus for employers and employee’s alike. Staff can gain hand-on job training giving them intimate knowledge of the work environment, increasing confidence in applying their skills and showcasing them in the work environment. Key skills such as time management and communication will also improve and it all adds up to staff becoming increasingly confident and productive.

Employers too will see the benefits of an apprenticeship through Knowledge-Web, Staff will become more organised, more productive and more competitive which can invigorate a company and help towards sustaining a vibrant economy.
