NVQs are work based awards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that are achieved through assessment and training. NVQ is short for National Vocational Qualification.

Approximate academic equivalents

There is no direct correlation or link between NVQs and other academic qualifications, however approximate equivalences have been made:-

• NVQ 1 = three to four GCSEs at grades D-E

• NVQ 2 = five GCSEs at grades A*-C

• NVQ 3 = two or more A levels

• NVQ 4 = Higher National Diploma (HND)

• NVQ 5 = ordinary degree
